Step by Step Installation of MSSQL 2014 Express

In this post we will walk through the process of step by step installation of MSSQL 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2.

As you are of aware of the latest release of MSSQL version 2014, Microsoft has made it publically available on April 1st 2014. MSSQL 2014 Offers new features like In-Memory OLTP which allows you to move the specific database tables to special in-memory structures instead of moving the whole database itself for delivering breakthrough performance. Other enhancement includes integration with Windows Azure for SQL backups, Resource Governor for I/O where we can limit the amount of IOPS etc.

So lets start the MSSQL 2014 installation on Windows Server 2012 R2.

Download Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express via

I had downloaded SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe file since this package contains all the components of SQL Server Express including SQL  Management Studio, Reporting Services etc.

Once downloaded, extract the SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU.exe file to begin with the installation.

Run the step file and you will be seeing the Installation Wizard.

Choose New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.


Accept the License term and click “Next” twice.


In Next option we can select the available features. You can select accordingly or select All in order to install all the component and click Next.


Select whether default or named instance. I have chosen “Default” instance name “MSSQLSERVER” and click Next


Next section is Server Configuration where we can specify the startup time. Click Next.


Next section we will be asked to setup the Database Engine Configuration where we can mention the SQL Authentication methods used.

By default, Windows Authentication mode is enabled. We can setup SQL Authentication in this step. Otherwise we can configure it later. Click Next.


Next one is Reporting Service Configuration. Select “Install and configure option. Click Next which will begins the SQL installation.


A progress bar will be displayed regarding the installation.


You’re done! MSSQL 2014 Express has been installed and you will be seeing the following screen.


Now we login to the Database server using SQL Management Studio for Managing the Databases.
